Solar Vehicle Team at UW

In my Freshman year at the University of Washington I co-founded the Solar Vehicle Team at UW which raised $150k in its first year and is 70% done with our competition car that will race in the Formula Sun Grand Prix in summer 2025. I currently serve as the Battery Team Lead working on composite structures design and Lithium-ion pack assembly. Read more at uwsvt.com

World Record Endurance RC Car

In summer of 2021 I led a team of 4 of my fellow students in to break the world record for the longest distance traveled by an RC car on a single charge. our car traveled a total of 72 miles in almost 11 and a half hours, beating out the previous record holder Duracell by more than 10 miles. You can find us on the Guinness world records website here, or you can read our school newspaper's article here!

Micro E-Bike

Built from an old gas mini bike, this tiny e-bike has a 1000W motor and a custom built lithium-ion battery pack with a built in battery management system. I hand laminated carbon fiber over the existing body panels as they were severely cracked and damaged. I custom designed, machined, and welded on several components including the motor mount. It also has fully functional blinkers, brake lights, and of course, a horn :)

Metalworking

I have been certified by Maker Nexus (a local bay area makerspace) in the safe use of MIG/TIG/Stick welding equipment, manual mill and lathe operation, sheet metal cutting and bending, grinders, bandsaws, and more.

Some of the projects I have pictured here in various stages of completion including a laser engraved ring, plasma cut metal rose mechanical pencil, scribe, and random practice pieces I made.

Gas Bike

An abomination of bicycle and motorcycle that's only technically legal, built with the intention to get me places faster without the need for a driver's license.  Pictures of an (almost) complete engine teardown are in the gallery.

Lithium-ion Golf Cart Conversion

Built to be a model for my school's auto shop to help teach the basics of electric car technology to future students! includes a custom lithium-ion battery pack with a battery management system and custom see-through acrylic battery box just because it's cool.

3-DOF Flight Simulator

Built during my internship at Kittyhawk (a company that designs electric air taxis) to train their pilots and demonstrate the aircraft to clients.

It can move in 3 directions at the same time to mimic the motion of any aircraft. It also was designed to be quickly changeable to different control setups since the company's next design was not known when it was being made.

it includes a quick release table and 8020 frame that was cut on a waterjet and a touchscreen monitor to display interactive instruments.

FPV Fixed Wing

An upgraded version of the ZOHD Dart running gps software for almost fully autonomous flight. A 3S battery can take it to 65mph or up to 30 minute flight times.

FPV Quads

learning how all of the components for this project worked, how to pick my own and how to solder them together taught me the basics of electronics (and how easy it is to break them sometimes)

Gravel Bike

Built mostly using parts I found on eBay, this bike became how I got to and from school on most days. I used some special paint and filler to help hide the many scratches and dents on the frame. I'm planning on upgrading to disc brakes and wider rims in the future.

Flight Sim Avionics

In an attempt to save money on a flight sim setup I decided to try and make my own avionics. In the end I probably spent about twice as much as buying off the shelf but the experience of making them was infinitely more valuable. Pictured here is a trim wheel I made with a rotary encoder hooked up to an Arduino

CAD for 3D printing and Machining

This is less of a specific project and more of a skillset. Out of a desire to design and fabricate parts for other projects (like this like this Raspberry pi case for my friend) I got access to SolidWorks and Fusion360 and taught myself the basics.

Computer

Built to replace my family's aging PC I built from parts I bought online and from friends.

Other RC stuff

Not as flashy as some of my other creations but building kits and fixing old  models is what started me on my journey to more complicated projects.

Ham Radio

I studied for and passed the General class ham radio license test which allows me to transmit on some UHF, VHF, and HF bands. My callsign is KN6MUN. if you ever hear me say hi!
